Britney Spears settles legal battle with father Jamie Spears after conservatorship: Reports
View Date:2025-01-11 19:55:47
Britney Spears and her father, Jamie Spears, have finally settled their ongoing legal battle.
The father and daughter settled for an undisclosed amount, according to CNN and The New York Times, almost three years after the pop star's conservatorship ended in 2021.
The legal dispute stemmed from Jamie Spears' legal fees and his handling of the 42-year-old singer's finances.
In legal filings, Jamie Spears, 71, previously asserted he is entitled to have his legal fees paid by his daughter's near-$60 million estate "to ensure the Conservatorship can be wound up quickly and efficiently to allow Britney to take control of her life as she and Jamie desire," according to his 2021 petition to the court.
"The request is shameful," Britney Spears' lawyer, Mathew S. Rosengart, said in a statement at the time. "Mr. Spears reaped many millions of dollars from Britney as a conservator, while paying his lawyers millions more, all from Britney’s work and hard-earned money."
Rosengart told USA TODAY in a statement Monday that "Britney Spears won when her father was suspended as conservator and she obtained her freedom and her civil rights and liberties were restored."
He continued: "She now has obtained her final piece of freedom as she instructed, as she no longer will need to be entangled with the court or the court system in this matter."
Jamie Spears' lawyer, Alex M. Weingarten, said the singer's father is "thrilled all this is over," the lawyer told the outlets.
"Jamie loves his daughter very much and worked tirelessly to protect her," he continued. "He wants the best for Britney, nothing less."
Britney Spears, Jamie Spears settlement comes after decade-long conservatorship ended
Britney Spears' conservatorship, and her highly publicized legal battle to get out of it, ended in 2021 after nearly 14 years.
The pop star was first placed under a conservatorship in 2008 after suffering a public breakdown the year prior that played out before the paparazzi, who captured her erratic behavior.

Momentum to end Spears' conservatorship picked up dramatically following the release of The New York Times' documentary "Framing Britney Spears," which put a spotlight on controversies surrounding the pop star's conservatorship and the #FreeBritney movement to end it.
The public outcry against the conservatorship reached a fever pitch after Spears delivered an emotional testimony at a June 2021 court hearing, in which she called her conservatorship "abusive" and pleaded for it to end.

After controlling his daughter's person, finances or both since the conservatorship's implementation in 2008, Jamie Spears was suspended from the conservatorship in September 2021 and ordered to turn over all her assets, estimated at about $60 million, to a temporary conservator accountant.
